Basic Tips on How to Treat Sciatic Back Pain
If you are suffering from an abnormal amount of back pain, it’s quite possible that you are suffering from sciatic back pain or what is commonly known as Sciatica. Sciatica is essentially a painful tingling or even numbness sensation of the nerve roots that connect to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is formed in the lower back by the nerve endings coming out of the spinal chord. The sciatic nerve extends down the backs of each of one’s legs and also through the buttocks. Sciatic back pain can be extremely uncomfortable for the sufferer and it’s recommended to seek treatment for sciatic nerve pain as soon as possible from your Doctor.
What are the causes?
Most sciatic back pain is due to a ruptured or bulging disc, also known as a herniated disc. Though, sciatic back pain can also be caused by other factors such as the narrowing of the spinal canal, spurs in one’s bone’s or compression of the nerve roots. Arthritis sufferers may also be a target for sciatic back pain as they are common sufferers of bone spurs, which can lead directly to sciatic back pain.
What are the symptoms?
The most common symptoms of sciatic back pain are pains that start in one’s back and travel downwards to the buttocks or the backs of one’s legs. This may cause a sensation of tingling, numbness or sharp pains that seem to travel down your back. There are several things that may exacerbate sciatic back pain and possibly make it worse including sitting, standing for long periods of time or any sort of movements that cause the spine to flex. It is recommended that if you have sciatic back pain, that you avoid these types of movements or activities when possible.
How is sciatic back pain diagnosed?
Sciatica is most commonly diagnosed with a physical exam coupled with a medical history report. X-rays and other types of tests including MRIs are often performed to get to the root of the problem and properly diagnose any symptoms.
How to treat back pain?
If you are a sufferer of sciatic back pain, then you may be wondering about a treatment for sciatic nerve pain. Sciatic back pain, in many cases will go away with time. The most common treatment for sciatic nerve pain is exercise and avoiding strenuous movements of the body. There are several things you can do if you are suffering from sciatic back pain to minimize the pain and relieve the pressure and agitation associated with it.
- Avoid sitting for long periods of time
- Try alternating lying down with short walks
- Use a heating pad or try taking a warm shower
