Research shows over 50% of the population over 15 years old use glasses. This number jumps significantly to over 85%, over the age of 45.
Why are so many people wearing glasses? Answer: because of blurry vision.
So let’s look at this subject in more detail.
What causes Blurry Vision? There are many reasons, here are the top 5 causes:
Long-sighted Short-sighted Astigmatism Presbyopia Weak Eye Muscles
1. Long-sighted (Hyperopia)
Longsightedness, is when your eyes focus images behind your retina (back of your eyes). This mainly affects reading, computer use and office tasks. Longsighted can cause symptoms such as blurry vision, headaches and tired eyes after a period of concentrated visual work. Reading becomes more difficult and school work can be affected.
2. Myopia (short-sighted)
A myopic, or shortsighted person, has difficulty seeing objects in the distance. These include blurry road signs, blackboards in a classroom, or scoreboards at a sporting event. Myopia is a common condition, occurring in about 15% of the population. Often, a person will not realize that they cannot see clearly, especially with mild shortsightedness. However, an eye examination by an optometrist will reveal the problem. Although there is no certain prevention for myopia, properly prescribed spectacles or contact lenses will enable a person to see clearly.
3. Astigmatism
Astigmatism is when the shape of the cornea (front of the eyes) is not spherical, but oval in shape. This causes blurry vision. Astigmatism can only cause headaches, fatigue and reduced concentration.
4. Presbyopia
Presbyopia is a common condition which makes reading difficult. This is usually first noticed around the age of 40 to 50 years, and is part of the normal aging process. This can happens because after 40 years old, the lens inside the eye starts to lose its strength. This loss in strength makes it difficult for a person to focus clearly, and tasks such as reading and computer use become difficult. You might notice blurry vision, sore eyes, headaches or tiredness resulting from reading or computer use.
5. Weak Eye Muscles
Muscles are need for focusing (accommodation) and moving the eyes across a page (Eye tracking). If the eye muscles are weak, they tire easily resulting in blurry vision.
The optometrist can help alleviate symptoms with eye exercises or spectacles for close work such as reading and using computers.
Other Causes:
Other causes of blurry vision include dry eyes, watery eyes and eye infections. More serious eye diseases can also cause blurry vision including catatract, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye damage.
What do I do?
If you notice blurry vision, make sure you make an appointment with an Optometrist. They will provide a comprehensive eye check up and discuss the causes with you.
Most commonly blurry vision is treated with glasses or vision therapy. If a more serious eye condition is found, the optometrist will discuss the treatment with you.
